Volta – Slavery Ghana
In March 2011, the Photo for Freedom ‘Volta’ exhibition captured the essence of life in Ghana for many – the struggle, the poverty, the beauty, and the hope for a better future. The project grew from an awareness of the plight of many children in Ghana, destined to a lifetime of slavery.
Taken in the fishing communities of Lake Volta, 37 limited edition images in haunting black and white tell the story of children and adults forced into a life of slavery. Tom’s images capture the beautiful innocence of children on one hand, but a closer look reveals something else – a sense of despair, even emptiness. Some of the images capture adult fishermen, themselves quite likely to have been victims of the same child slavery.
